Geocache Description:

By Metro: Take the red line to either Cleveland Park or Woodley Park – Zoo stop. It’s about halfway between the two. If you don’t want to walk the whole way, hop on bus L1, L2, or L4.

By Car: Park in Lot A at the National Zoo or at a meter on the street. Before feeding the meter, check the times posted. There is no parking on alternate sides during rush hours.

On Connecticut Avenue in 1819, there was a lovely estate built here. The home provided a respite to residents from the insufferable heat and unpleasantness of a Washington summer, offering a higher elevation, cooler breezes, and unspoiled rural and forested surroundings. One such resident was Jefferson Davis, then the Secretary of War. His wife Varina wrote in 1856 that “at midsummer we took a house two or three miles out of town, and spent the heated term there. Mr. and Mrs. [Franklin] Pierce used frequently to come for us for the day, and such intimate talks, such unrestrained intercourse and pleasantries exchanged are charming memories.”

Although the subsequent owners had no relation to Jefferson Davis, Union soldiers during the civil war looted their large fruit orchards and forced the homeowners to flee into the city. The large frame dwelling survived the war and later became a fashionable resort. In 1920, it was torn down to make way for the apartment building that you see here today.
