SERRA DE
ALVAIÁZERE
Recuando até
aos primórdios da povoação, encontram-se vestígios da passagem de
romanos e mouros, como as moedas encontradas perto de Pelmá, a
estrada romana que ligava Tomar a Conímbriga e ainda, as ruínas de
um antigo castelo mouro.
Reedificada a
primeira povoação por Sancho I, este concedeu-lhe foral em 1200,
sendo Alvaiázere elevada à categoria de vila por foral de D. João
I, datado de 1388 e confirmado por D. Manuel em 1514.
Nesta vila
vale a pena olhar a igreja quinhentista que, sem grande notoriedade
tem a seu lado um coreto moderno (anos 30). Um pouco além da igreja
para norte encontra-se uma grande casa brasonada do sec. XVII onde
se diz ter estado escondido um dos assassinos de D.
Inês.
Hoje
ALVAIÁZERE ocupa uma área de 160,5 km2, com 8 112 habitantes e 7
freguesias. É um dos 16 municípios distrito de LEIRIA e comemora o
feriado municipal no dia de Santo António (13 de Junho).
A leste da
vila, e bem visível, encontra-se a serra de Alvaiázere.Neste maciço
calcário a destruição da vegetação arbórea (graças a sucessivos
incêndios) deu lugar ao mato.
A subida ao
ponto mais elevado da serra levá-lo-á a esta cache.
Além da
cache, poderá vislumbrar uma magnífica paisagem graças aos 618
metros de altitude.
Dada a existência de estrada alcatroada até ao ponto mais alto, a
subida pode ser feita de automóvel a pé ou de bicicleta (opção
escolhida por mim).
Signs
of the Past
There are manor houses and lordly estates in Maças de D. Maria,
Maças de Caminho, Almoster, Rego da Murta and Pussos.Some have an
eighteenth century look about them while others, older, have fine
Keeps.
Alvaiázere,
granted is charter by D.Sancho I in 1200, has an interesting
bandstand dating from the thirties standing in the square of the
sixteenth century mother church, and near the Town Hall there is a
seventeenth century manor house which bears a famous coat of arms
above its main door.
The pillories
of Maças de D. Maria and Pelmã are evidence of their antiquity and
there are fine views of the surrounding region from the courtyard
of the Mother Church.
The
views from Serra de Alvaiázere
The ascent to the highest point of the mountain takes you to this
cache. A lofty, restful limestone mountain range covered in heather
and small wild orchids.
The views
from the peaks of the Serra are magnificent. To the east lie
fertile plains of Alvaiázere, scattered whit vineyards, olive
groves, fields of maize and white and ochre painted
cottages.
To the west
in the distance, stretches the magnificent valley of the Nabão
River. From the slopes can be heard the measured sounds of herds of
goats while on the same slopes stands the lovely chapel of Our Lady
of Covões.
