This cache is hidden in the wall of a partly water-filled
man-made pit. I'm not absolutely sure of the origins of this pit,
but it has probably been formed as the result of quarrying stone to
be used as building material for the nearby motorway. The water
that has filled the pit is unusually clear and has a strangely
turquoise shade to it. A scuba diving friend of mine told me that
the pit is nine metres deep at the deeper end.
Local people have found several uses for this pit. Some use it
as a swimming pool, others as a garbage dump. Some, of the more
delinquent persuasion, have even ditched stolen cars into the
depths. And I've been told that there are even fish for the fishing
(mostly perches). The place may look deserted at times but people
come and go there quite often and therefore the cache is rather
well hidden. Please rehide it accordingly.
There is no access to the cache site from any of the nearby main
roads, you will have to go the long way around. Take road number
140 north of Heinola and turn to "Suomäki". At N61° 15.492' and
E026° 03.213' you will find a small road which leads near the
cache. The road used to be open, but as of December 2006 it has
been blocked by a gate and you will have to leave your car
there.
If you come here with kids, do not let them search for the
cache. The hiding place is not particularly hard to reach by a
sure-footed adult but if you should fall, you will end up in the
deep water. In the winter the rock is slippery and you should
exercise extra caution unless the water is properly frozen.

Tämä kätkö on piilotettu osittain veden täyttämän avolouhoksen
seinämään. Louhoksen alkuperästä minulla ei ole varmaa tietoa,
mutta todennäköisesti siitä on louhittu kiveä läheisen moottoritien
rakennusmateriaaliksi. Vesi, joka on täyttänyt louhoksen, on
poikkeuksellisen kirkasta ja sävyltään oudon turkoosia. Sukellusta
harrastava kaverini on kertonut, että syvimmässä kohdassa vettä on
yhdeksän metriä.
Paikalliset ovat löytäneet useita käyttötarkoituksia
louhokselle. Jotkut käyttävät sitä uima-altaana ja toiset
kaatopaikkana. Eräät, rikollisemmin suuntautuneet, ovat jopa
upottaneet varastettuja autoja sen syvyyksiin. Ja minulle on
kerrottu, että sieltä saa jopa onkimalla kaloja (enimmäkseen
ahvenia). Paikka saattaa näyttää melko hiljaiselta, mutta ihmiset
kulkevat siitä vähän väliä, joten kätkö on melko hyvin piilotettu.

Kätkölle ei pääse mistään ohi kulkevalta päätieltä, vaan joudut
hieman kiertämään. Mene tietä numero 140 Heinolasta pohjoiseen ja
käänny tielle, jossa on kyltti "Suomäki". Koordinaateista N61°
15.492' ja E026° 03.213' alkaa pikkutie, joka oli ennen avoinna,
mutta joulukuussa 2006 se suljettiin puomilla, joten joutunet
jättämään autosi tähän.
Jos tulet paikalle lasten kanssa, älä anna heidän etsiä kätköä
itsekseen. Varmajalkainen aikuinen pääsee piilopaikalle helposti,
mutta jos sattuu putoamaan, putoaa suoraan syvään veteen. Talvella
kivet ovat liukkaita ja silloin on syytä erityiseen varovaisuuteen
jos vesi ei ole kunnolla jäätynyt.
