Everyone, Mark your calendars!!!!!!
October the 20th, 21st, and 22nd is the “Big” Geocaching Weekend Event in Hazard City/Perry County. The event is going to be called “The Hazard City/Perry County Tour.”
I, Kentucky Trio and other members of The Big Sandy Area Geocachers, am working with The Hazard City/Perry County Department of Tourism to host this “Big “ weekend event.
We have 50-55 caches, which will become permanent on October the 20th, 2006, and 15 temporary caches for you to log. These caches will be located throughout Hazard City and Perry County. Perry County was formed in 1821. It is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 700 to 2520 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 29,390 in a land area of 342.15 square miles, an average of 85.9 people per square mile. The county seat is Hazard. Perry County is a long county with a lot of distance in between the two ends. These 50 to 55 caches will be located around some places of historical significance to Perry County and Hazard City as well as other places of significance, interest and/or scenic areas so bring your cameras to take a lot of pictures. We will have prize caches with the prizes in them or cards with prize on them with a number. You get the prize that corresponds to that number.
We will hopefully be having some Travel Bugs in the caches for you to pickup and log as finds. If the Jeep Company sends me some green jeeps, there will be some green Jeep TB’s in some of the caches.
We are having a coin made for the event which is available by preorder or at the event for $8.00. Extra T-shirts will also be available at the event for a cost of $6.00 per shirt. There will be a small entrance fee for a geocaching team of $10.00 per geocaching name. Example; a family that goes by one name will just pay $10.00. For each 10.00 registration fee, we will give you two t-shirts made for this event, and a goody bag from local businesses and merchants in the area. We will also be asking those that are interested in coming to the event to start preregistering on September the 1st,2006 so that we may get an estimated count of who will be attending or who plans to attend the event. You can register for the event by email, which we prefer that you do or you can come to the evnt and register. The registration fee will be $10.00 up to and including at the start of the event.
To register for the big Hazard Geocaching Event in October, please send me by email or mail, your real name, geocaching name, address, home phone number with area code, number of people in your party--how many children and adults, where you plan on staying for the event or the weekend of the event, and when you plan on coming into Hazard for that weekend to my private email at rmm879@windstream.net.
Remember, the cost for the registration is $10.00 per geocaching name. You may also register at the event for the same cost of $10.00 but we would prefer that you register before the night of the event so that we will know approximately how many to expect in attendance.
Those wanting to send the information by snail mail or send their registration fee in early may do so at this address;
Mike McCaffrey

319 Cole Avenue
Hazard, Kentucky 41701
Also, please post on the event page that you will be attending.
Thank you,
Kentucky Trio..
We are also working on getting those that come to the event discounts at some of our local hotels, discounts for staying and eating at The Buckhorn State Resort Park Lodge. We are also working on getting discounted rates for those that want to camp at the Buckhorn State Resort Park Campground. There may be some available camping spots within the county that would not usually be used for camping, some with electric and some without. We are working on that.

I just got off the phone with the Perry County Judge Executive and he has given permission for anyone that wants to use some of the ground on The Perry County Park to camp in a tent or trailer may do so in a specified area. There is electricity hook ups in this area but he cannot guarantee that they work. He cannot guarantee you will have electricity. There is also the Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park Campground which is about 45 minutes to an hour away but still within Perry County. It is down a long and winding road. A little closer to us is Carrs Fork or Carrs Creek Lake Campground which is the next county over but is a little closer to us.
The event will start on October the 20th, 2006 with registration being from 6:00-8:00p.m. in The Perry County Park at the Senior Citizens Building (log cabin) in their banquet hall. Also on that evening, we will be treating you to a wonderful dinner catered by one of our local restaurants. That will go on until the last cacher is fed.
On Saturday, October the 21st, 2006, at 8:00am, all cachers will report to the parking lot of this senior citizens building to get the coordinates to all the caches in the county. You will be able to cache all day Saturday, Saturday Night if you want to, and Sunday until 12:00 noon.
On Sunday, October the 22nd, 2006, all cachers will cache until 12:00noon. Then, they will meet back at a specified location where they will be served a small meal. During this time, prizes and awards will be handed out. The event will be scheduled to end about 3:00pm.
October is a great time of the year, especially here in the mountains. Leaves are changing colors, wildlife is stirring, the air is cool, not real hot, and the nights can get really cold. While here for this event, we do not want you to just cache but enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and what the mountains of Eastern KY has to offer.
Keep checking back to this website caching page as I will add details as they become available.
For those of you that do not have a laptop computer, be sure to bring your USB cable support so that we may or you can download all of the coordinates for the permenant and temporary caches to your GPS for you.
