Geocache Description:

The location of the cache is described in the Hint area below

A short history:
The irregular-shaped castle, with its external tower, was built in 1556 by modifying the buildings of the benedictine abbey on an artifical island created in a swampy area at the Southern foot of the Stony Hills ("Köves hegy").
During the centuries the castle had changed owners and occupants many times and had been used for various purposes.
In 1605 the Parliament was assembled here, and on the 15th of April Istvan Bocskai was elected to be the Sovereign of Hungary and Transsylvania, and in 1607 Zsigmond Rakoczi was elected to be the Sovereign of Transsaylvania.
During the 18th and 19th century, the - by then ruinous - castle was rebuilt as a baroque palace.
The castle today houses a museum, a theatre, a library, a hotel, a wedding chapel and a restaurant.
Visitors can enter the castle free of charge. As far as we know, the gates are closed after 8 PM!
