Description by hitechman: Cache is in a black, 3 x 3 x 3 inch lock
and lock. This cache will be extremely difficult to locate in
snow.
Cache is near an old, abandoned RR Grade in Lake County on public
property near the my cabin. You can drive within 20 yards of it
with a truck, but I'd suggest that you walk the last 150 yards if
you have a car. You may have to cross a small ditch (water at
times) if you approach from the north. The Mason/Lake county line
is about 600 feet west. Be sure to enter from Lake county as the
property in Mason County is private (including that portion of the
grade).
Please sign the log and if you take something, please leave
something of equal value.
Heavy tree cover may affect the accuracy of
your GPSr--that's why I gave it a 2 difficulty.
Please rehide the container as well or better than you found it.
Use caution during the fall hunting seasons (very popular hunting
area).
This old grade is from the "Era of Small Railroads" in Michigan.
This Peacock G. R. Totten line was completed in 1893 (by 3 Manistee
investors) as a means to haul Michigan timber logs. Millerton (1.5
miles to the west) and Sauble Station (2 miles to the east) were 2
stops.
This line became insolvent in 1913 and was sold. The Pere
Marquette RR liquidated the right of way in 1921 and the tracks
were torn up and removed.
The remains of a bridge over the Little Sable River and a water
tank (to fill the steam engines) are located on private property .5
miles to the west.
Ernest Hemingway is reported to have fished for trout in the
rivers in this area.
