Pelkosenniemen taistelussa 16. - 18.12.1939 suomalaisia johti majuri A. Perksalo. Pelkosenniemen taistelut ratkaisivat Lapin kohtoalon Talvisodassa. Vihollisen joukot lyötiin hajalle sitkeissä taisteluissa ja ajettiin takaa noin 85 km Saija kylän itäpuolelle. Pataljoona kiersi vanhalta koulun mäeltä Kilpivaaran - Luirojoen suun kautta Kohoaapa - Savukosken tielle. Taistelut käytiin Kupittaja - Pelkosenniemen lossialueella. Omat tappiot: 117 kaatunutta, 103 haavoittunutta ja 50 kadonnutta. Vihollisen tappiot: Toistatuhatta.

In the battle of Pelkosenniemi 16 - 18 December 1939 the Finns were under the command of Major A. Perksalo. The battles of Pelkosenniemi were of decisive importance of Lapland in the Winter War. Enemy troops were scattered in tough battles and pursued 85 km to the east of the village Saija. The batallion made a detour from the old school hill via Kilpivaara and the mouth of river Luirojoki to the road Kohoaapa - Savukoski. The battles were fought in the Kupittaja - Pelkosenniemi ferry area. Finnish losses: 117 dead, 103 wounded and 50 lost. Enemy losses: more than one thousand.
