Little Falls is a pretty spot on the St. Croix river. It’s a
favorite stopping place for guided trips down the river and there
is a picnic area and parking at the falls. This is a remote area,
but worth the trip. 4WD is not required, but don’t bring the sports
car!
To get to Little Falls, take Rt. 6 to Vanceboro. Heading east,
Salmon Brook road is on the right, just after a sharp right curve,
just before a sharp left and 1/4 mile from the border crossing. If
you cross the RR tracks, you went too far. Coming from Canada, just
after the tracks, go straight onto Salmon Brook road. After .6
miles, Salmon Brook rd changes to dirt. .2 miles later, there is a
rd to the left. Don’t take that one, go straight! 2.2 miles later,
bear right at the Y, 1.3 miles later bear right at another Y, .4
miles later you will reach the parking area. You should be at N45°
30.500 W067° 27.736. The trail starts just back up the road at the
outhouse Hike along the river several hundred feet until you reach
a picnic area, the cache won’t be much further. I had spotty GPS
reception, so if you need more help, check the hint from the picnic
area. I averaged 5 readings at 20-25’ accuracy, but saw 60-75’ at
other times. The cache is a camo’ed 4-lock container, starting off
with a Maine coin (trackable at mainegeocaching.org), some
petrified wood, a Coins&Pins GPS lanyard and some other stuff.
One last warning, if you want to get out alive, bring some bug
spray! -----WARNING----- I have been informed that there is a
history of poaching in this area at night. One cacher came in at
night and saw several cars and people and heard a shot, may have
been directed at him, maybe not. This spot has beautiful views in
the daytime and is a good picnic spot, but is not recommended at
night for this reason.
