The nearest car park is at Roddlesworth Info Centre N 53° 41.329 W 002° 30.488. Leave the carpark by the path in front of the cafe and then take the bridleway which runs by the side of the row of houses.
The container is a smallish/medium tupperware box. This old ruin was formerly known as Stepback Cottage. The name 'Owd Aggie's' comes from the owner who, in 1860, was murdered by thieves who broke into her home and stole £5. In later years the cottage became a tearoom selling tea, oatcakes and buttermilk. It was a popular spot for picknickers but fell into disrepair in the early 20th century.
Stepback Clough is full of history- the name is said to come from Oliver Cromwell whowas on the moor in bad weather with his troops and ordered them to "step back,go no further". But who knows for sure?
Coal mining took place on the moor during the 18th and 19th century and the location of one site can still be seen by looking over the wall which runs alongside the stream. The white triangular cap stone marks the spot.
If you would like a longer walk then this cache could be combined with 'Round the Ruins No 3 Hollinshead Hall' GCVBZJ
