Geocache Description:

The Newtown Forest Association is believed to be one of the oldest private land trusts in Connecticut, founded in 1924. More information is available at: http://www.newtownforestassociation.org/nfahome.html The NFA has included in the cache information brochures and membership information packages. Feel free to take these, however, please contact nfageocaching@newtownforestassociation.org if you remove the last one or if there are none in the cache for someone to replenish the supply.

A wonderful walk through a beautiful Nature Preserve owned by the Newtown Forest Association. The NFA is giving memberships as first and second finders prizes on this cache. This cache is a .50 cal. ammo can. Parking is available at: N41° 21.027 W073° 18.126. From the NFA Website: Parking and access: Castle Meadow Road (near Sign) & On Maltbie Road - trail head to right of driveway #30 (look for 6"x6" NFA sign) The information in the cache about the NFA should stay in the cache, for others to read. This is a 119 acre preserve donated to the Newtown Forest Association. The majority of the preserve was donated in 1967 by Anna Lord Straus totaling 94 acres. The 27 acre pond was created in 1867 to provide a power supply for the Peck's Saw Mill, and a succession of mills. In 1917 the pond property was sold by Esther Morgan to BHC and then to Don Zemo who, in 1989 offered the pond to the NFA in exchange for a corridor of land between his lot and the pond. The NFA values the intentions of their benefactors and have some rules that they ask all users respect. When I placed this cache with Saugatuck Rover we found this little guy sunning himself on a rock: Image All NFA properties are held in trust. The trails are for walking and equestrian traffic only and all NFA properties are closed from sunset to sunrise. Dogs are allowed but must be on leash and under the owner's control at all times. Please be prepared to clean up after your dog. Absolutely no motorized vehicles. (Please report any ATV's you see on the trails)
