Geocache Description:

Fort Augustus Staircase Loch

Fort Augustus is situated at the southern tip of Loch Ness on the A82, which is a popular route for tourists making their way further north or returning to their homes in the south.

Fort Augustus was named after the old military barracks that were blown up by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Highlanders in 1746. The original name of the village was Cill Chuimein. Running through the village is the River Oich and the impressive Caledonian Canal and lock system, built by Thomas Telford in the early 1800’s is worth stopping to look at.

The cache can be used as a drive-by cache as it is in a picnic area next to the Car Park but take some time to wander around the village and have a good look.
