Geocache Description:

Brant Fell, Windermere, Cumbria, is one of twenty one 'stations' Thomas West describes in his book 'A Guide to the Lakes, Cumberland and Westmorland'. The five around Bowness on Windermere are Windermere 'station', north and south ends of 'Bella Isle', Brant Fell and Rawlinson Nab. Only three are possible as geocaches.

This cache is one of 21 'stations' or viewpoints that Thomas West describes in the first guide book to the Lake District. Reference copies available to read in some Cumbrian libraries. Peter Crosthwaite of Keswick, first published in 1794, outline maps showing these 'stations' around the four major lakes West describes. Coniston Water has four 'stations', Windermere has five, Derwentwater has eight and Bassenthwaite lake has four. There are two bonus 'stations' elsewhere. All 'stations' were chosen for scenic view and charm, making ideal geocache locations. Nowadays trees have matured to obstruct some of the views. But not on Brant Fell due to sheep grazing.
Interestingly, Grevel Lindop in his book 'A literary guide to the Lake District', puts West's fifth 'station' on top of Queen Adelaide's hill, Millerground. Crosthwaite marks Adelaide Hill as one of his 'stations' and West's and Harriet Martineau descriptions do not qualify this viewpoint as a West location. Queen Adelaide's Hill was named such in 1840 when a royal visit to Bowness occured. Brant Fell is marked by Crosthwaite as a West 'station', and it fits the descriptions of the views. These are modern names, in West's day they were unnamed, and visitors would have to ask directions. Nowadays we can use the internet and a GPSr.
Look out for other Thomas West geocaches.

Only three caches are possible for Windermere area, as Belle Isle is privately owned, and West suggested tourists stand at north and south ends of 'Mr. Curwen's island'. So use a boat like West's readers, and station yourself just off shore of either end of Belle Isle to admire the views. Originally called 'Long Island', renamed by Mr. J C Curwen to Bella Island, after his wife Isabella, heiress to the coal mining fortunes near Workington. Nearby cache link will reveal the other two Windermere Thomas West stations.

Cache is sparse as a SOTAcache, containing:
  • Log book
  • Pencil
  • eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • None of which are swaps.

Cache is BIOKIPS clear plastic container. Size 12 x 8 x 5 cm internal. Room for small swaps and calling cards.

Brant Fell is popular venue for boulderers, and locals for the best views of full length of Windermere. Trig pillar is missing.

Possible Route. Walk from parking waypoint along stony track, past TWO fenced woodlands (400m?), almost to mature conifers at farm. Leave track, turn uphill (SW) passing pond (reservoir), ascend to summit. This route works in darkness.
