Geocache Description:

The latest cache in the Talimena Treasures cache series will take you down a road that once brought wagons of supplies over the treacherous Ouachita Mountains.

Be sure to bring your camera for this cache because you won't believe what's here: the remains of a road built in 1832 by the U.S. Army. Soldiers had to dig and form the entire thing by hand. The road bed and a rock culvert remain. You'll actually walk down the old road - which is slowly being reclaimed by nature - to reach the cache. The cache is about .20 miles from the parking area. The hike is not long and not very steep.

The road was originally used to relocate the Choctaw people to their new home in Indian Territory and to move supplies and troops between Fort Towson in Oklahoma and Fort Smith in Arkansas. Robert E. Lee, General Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, and other famous figures used the road. Travelers from Poteau, Wister and Talihina used the road until about 1930.

There is a nice picnic area here. Old Military Trail begins at the parking area, traveling north 6.6 miles to Holson Valley Road.

This area is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Another cool detail: there are now caches on the middle of the Old Military Road (here) and at both ends:

The cache on the Fort Smith end
The cache on the Fort Towson end

Both are highly recommended. Enjoy! Be sure to do the rest of the Talimena Treasures caches.

Note: This guy was found in the rock wall, so use caution.
