Geocache Description:

This is a small cache hidden along a dirt road that leads to a beautiful picnic spot above the town of Louis Trichardt.

The story is told that Boer soldiers witnessed a few English soldiers fleeing from a lion during the Anglo-Boer war somewhere in 1900. The only tree around was a Cabbage Tree (Cussonia transvaalensis). The soldiers climbed the tree and continually shouted "Kiepersol! Kiepersol!", with the lion growling at them from below. No one can tell how the story ended, but untill today, the Cabbage Tree is referred to as a Kiepersol tree in Afrikaans.

Common Cabbage Tree (Cussonia spicata) No. 564

Description: The Common Cabbage Tree is an evergreen tree that grows up to 15 metres tall. The Common Cabbage tree has long grey stems with smooth bark.
Flowers from April to May and fruits from June to September.

Habitat: Distributed from the Sudan in the North to the Western Cape in the south.

General uses: The wood is soft and was historically used for the manufacture of brake-blocks for ox-wagons. The roots are succulent and edible. Leaves are browsed by Kudu and domestic stock. Baboons eat the young shoots. Rip fruit is eaten by Bulbuls, Louries, Starlings, Barbets and Mousebirds.

Medical uses: Decoctions are used to treat madness, convulsions, amenorrhoea, heart pains and venereal disease. Mashed roots have been used in the treatment of malaria.

At the cache location you will have beautiful views of the mountain above at a sharp bend in the road. From the road to the cache there is a bit of loose ground and uneven terrain. Walk down the edge of the bushes in the plantation for about 40m. As you look to your left, you will see the two huge Kiepersol trees. You will have to enter the bush about 20m deep to reach the cache.
The cache is a 1 liter sized plastic container.

FTF honours goes to "Loads of Cache"!
