Geocache Description:

Cache is located at Riverton.Up Richards Street on Gravel road to Mores reserve car park.

Cache is a green screwtop container.Take Hilltop Lookout track. There is some bush to start with but GPS coverage is good at the cache site.Riverton district is based on the rich harvest of land and sea,and from the lookout you have a panoramic view of both so remember to take your binoculars. To the North East you look over the fertile Western Southland plains and to the South West you look over Foveaux Straight towards Stewart Island and 980 mtr. MountAnglem.
Captain Cook sighted the strait in 1770 but did not enter as he believed Stewart Island to be part of the mainland. An American named O.F.Smith sailed through the strait in 1804 while searching for seals. He passed the information to the govenor of N.S.W. who the named the strait after one of his aides- Major Joseph Foveaux. The Strait is approximately 26 KM. wide and supports a fishing industry and is famous for its Blue Cod and Bluff oysters plus other varieties of fish. As well there is a annual crop of young Mutton birds taken from several islands.
Looking out to sea the aptly named Centre Island takes takes centre stage with its lighthouse guarding the Western entrance to the strait. The light was lit for the first time in 1878 and was manned by up to 3 families until 1987 when the keepers were withdrawn, stores came by sea and variously a bull,a donkey and a horse were used to carry them up to the houses before a tracror was provided. In the 1950s an airstrip was built. The light is carried in a 12 mtr Kauri tower and sits 81 mtrs above sea level.Originally powered by oil, then diesel generated electricity, and finally solar power and controlled from Wellington.
