For hundreds of years traders sailed these waters. They were wary of the Dark Continent and its treasures and dangers. Shallow bays in the area provided a safe anchorage during the summer months, and the explorers could cautiously trade for fresh water and supplies. The sun baked here and winds were often fair.
But in winter a monster from the Deep South emerged. When the days were short and sky a light blue, the trade winds came from the west. And with them the mighty seas from the Roaring Forties. The friendly and warm shoreline became a danger zone. A place of death and desperation. The leeshore had to be avoided, and crews could do nothing but set the compass to south west and sail towards the beasts of the Roaring Forties. Large mountains of cold green water. Vertical walls that made the timber hulls creak under the pressure of sail and counter pressure of the stones and cargo they carried as ballast. It was a fine line to tread. Many were never seen again. A few discovered a shard of black rock emerging from the sea, and ecstatic navigators ordered the sailors to swing the rudders to port as they found apparent safety under the running swells and the following winds. They had beaten the monster. They could stay out of the dreaded southern seas.
But those who turned north around this black rock soon found that it was not open sea, but a trap. A dead end.
To find the cache you will need to navigate a myriad of paths and routes. Follow the established routes (even if the northwester is blowing!) and ascend the rollers on the approach. The cache location will afford you a vista of this False Bay with its jagged edge.
To stay with an age-old Cape tradition, you will be expected to trade when you visit this - no trade, no log!
