South Webster Village was settled by workers for the nearby Bloom and Scioto Iron Furnaces and the Fire Brick Furnace Company in town... The community grew steadily into the mid 1900's... When the furnaces thrived, so did this area...
The Webster Fire Brick and Coal Company opened in 1869...The Company manufactured bricks in all shapes for the area furnaces, rolling mills, gas works, and lime kilns...When the railroad arrived, the bricks were shipped throughout the midwest and southern portions of the U.S...
The community population leveled off and has remained about the same since the mid 1900's, loosing only about 100 or so residents to the decline of local area industry... Many of the original founding families still play an intrical part in the village businesses, government and schools today...Many Webster Area families have chosen to remain where their families took root...The names of pioneering settlers interred in the town cemetery still have their bloodlines living here and thriving...
South Webster Cemetery is located on State Route 140 at the edge of the village on the hillside...This big old cemetery is sprawled out over three knolls and is final resting place to more than 300 family namesakes of this area.. It is still in use today...
The roster of those resting here includes Captain William Brady (1760-1843) who was hand picked by General George Washington to command the 11th Virginia Regiment...He received a Revolutionary War Pension of $10 a month...An early physician, Dr. Pleasant B. Cross (1845-1906)rests here...He treated those injured during the Civil War once they got back home from the front line...He himself enlisted in the Infantry and served a short time before returning the practice in South Webster...He successfully obtained increased pensions for Civil War Veterans who were wounded in the line of service, testifying at regional hearings regarding the pension claims...
Each namesake from present day South Webster has kin folk buried on the hill just outside town...They settled the land and they stayed... It is another cemetery filled with good people who lived interesting lives and stood up for their values and their country...
Cache is a medium size camo container...Look along the perimeter for this one...Think big tree when you are hunting...Walk past the grave of Warren White who tragically only lived 2 days in 1850...
