Leatherman once roamed SW Connecticut and SE New York from 1858 to 1889. He traveled
a 365-mile loop between the Connecticut
and Hudson
rivers. Approximately every month he would repeat his journey.
The man spoke primarily with grunts or gestures and dressed in
crudely stitched leather from his hat to his shoes. The suit was
made of soft-tanned calfskin leather and weighed about sixty
pounds. He would sleep outside year-round mostly in caves around
Connecticut and New York. More information on Leatherman can be
found at this link
According to the THE PENNY PRESS, Middletown, CT, on Monday,
December 3, 1888, the CT Humane Society had Leatherman arrested at
Staddle Hill. They took him to Hartford Hospital for treatment.
Leatherman had been suffering from cancer on his lip for nearly a
year. The Humane Society concluded he was not a fit person to roam
at large. He was admitted to Hartford Hospital. Despite health
problems, Leatherman quickly left the hospital and made his way to
Sing Sing, NY where he later died in a cave.
Hartford Hospital no longer stands as Leatherman once knew it.
The orginal hospital was located along Hudson Street. After
completing this cache, you’ll see why Leatherman wanted to leave
urban Hartford and get back
to a place less civilized.
Stage 1: Determine the number of flagpoles at the
listed coordinates. There should be no need to get out of your car.
This equals A.
Stage 2: N 41 46.(A-1)55 W 072 40.(A-2)85 Find the

We were able to place the cache without paying any parking fees; you may not be
as lucky. Traffic can be quite heavy near stages 1 and 2; you may
want to do this on the weekend.
We like to give a special thanks to The Researcher for his valued
input. We hope you enjoy the adventure!
