Geocache Description:

A simple micro of a type that most everybody has seen before. Cache has a pencil but you may want to bring a writing implement of your own. It's in a busy spot so be discreet when attempting this one. Please replace the cache as you found it.

This cache was placed in commemoration of Raceway Park:

Raceway Park was the longest operating racetrack in the Chicago area, opening in 1938 and closing in 2000 (62 years). Once billed as the “World’s Busiest Track”, over 6,700 feature races took place here. One of those included possibly the first auto race in the US after World War 2. If you would like to learn more about this historic race track, or even just see some great pictures, go here or here

Nothing remains of the old track now, not even a plaque commemorating the site. To get some idea of where the track was situated, do the following: while you are at the cache site look to the south and you will see an Aldis. The parking spaces and driving area in front of the store next to it is approximately where the start/finish line was located. Take a drive past and imagine you are the winner of one of the many races that were held here over the years.

There are a few sister caches in the Chicago area dedicated to other historic race tracks: Santa Fe Speedway & Santa Fe Speedway, by Panther in the Den; The RACE Is On, by soccermatha; Victory Lap, by camp637 & Oswego Dragway, by 2 CBR. Be sure to check them out!
