Geocache Description:

This is the fourteenth cache in a letterbox series inspired by the Geological Wall at St Andrews.

The Geological Wall contains 22 rocks collected from all over Fife. A leaflet created by the St Andrews Geological Heritage Project gives details of each rock, along with Ordnance Survey grid references of their source localities. Hopefully this series will end up taking cachers to each of these localities. It is my intention to hide the caches as close as possible to the grid references given in the leaflet - this may mean that the caches are not necessarily going to be hidden in scenic, historical or interesting places! The information about the rock given below has been adapted from the Geological Wall leaflet.

Crinoidal Limestone is pale grey and contains disc-like segments of crinoids (relatives of starfish) which would have lived on the floor of a warm sea. This limestone was burned to make lime for the building and agricultural industries.

You should be able to find parking just off the main road near where it turns the corner. Make your way east passing the Scottish Lime Centre on your right hand side. Follow the arrow, heading for the area between the house on the left and a wall on the right. One side of the barbed wire fence has been pulled down so you can walk through into this narrow gorge-like place! I thought it was like a secret world, and it gets even more surreal the further down you go! I’m assuming that the cliffs here are made of crinoidal limestone, though I didn’t see obvious evidence of crinoids in any of the rocks!

The history of Charlestown and nearby Limekilns, and their industrial past, is fascinating, however, I am not going to cover any of that in this description. I have it on good authority that there are some new caches being planned for this area which are going to provide lots of interesting information about these two towns!

Back to this cache - not sure how much your accuracy will be affected in this location, but the clue should help you if required. Cache contains log book, pencil, sharpener, stamper and ink pad.
