Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE COORDINATES LISTED!

Welcome to Nome, Alaska!! I hope this cache will give you an idea of life in remote Alaska. I also hope it will make you want to visit, as truly “There's No Place Like Nome”!

In order to find the cache, you must correctly answer these seven questions and then plug in the answers below. With the exception of question #6, all of the information can be found by visiting www.nomealaska.org and following the Visitor’s Center link.

1. When I was a kid, all of our TV was 'tape-delayed', meaning the tapes were physically shipped from Denver or Seattle and then aired locally. We were always a month behind to watch the world's news. Over the years, Nome's communication abilities have evolved. How many television channels does Nome's cable system currently boast? The answer = AB

2. Nome is the ‘hub’ of the Seward Peninsula. It provides a ‘life-line’ to the many neighboring Eskimo villages, including medical care. Norton Sound Regional Hospital is a 19-bed facility. How many physicians are on staff at NSRH? The answer = C

3. This is a fun-loving town and Nome’s residents find many creative ways to fill the long, winter days. An annual favorite event is the “Bering Sea Ice Golf Tournament”. What is par for this course? The answer + 9 = DE

4. Flying is as natural as driving a car in bush Alaska. In fact, the Seward Peninsula boasts the ONLY location in the US where mail is only deliverable by helicopter. But how many road systems connect Nome to a major city? The answer = F

5. Since moving from Nome, one of the things I miss most is the annual sandhill crane migration. For several weeks each fall, literally thousands of cranes fly overhead, making loud honking and whooping noises along the way. Somewhere in the photo gallery is a picture of sandhill cranes feeding in the tundra. The number of cranes in the photo = G

6. My family moved to Nome on a cold winter day in 1977. Who won the world-famous dogsled race from Anchorage to Nome that year? (You will have to visit the race’s website to find the answer.) The number of letters in the winner’s last name = H

7. Dogsled racing is a favorite sport for the locals. Somewhere in the photo gallery is a picture of a lone musher on a dog sled titled “Nome Kennel Club”. What is the musher’s bib number? The answer minus 1 = IJ

Now plug in the answers:

N 46* AB.CDE’
W 114* FG.HIJ’

Checksum: The combined value of your answers should be 137.
Please replace the cache exactly as you found it to avoid detection by gnomes (aka Nome Muggles)! And BYOP.
