This cache has been placed as part of a cache exchange between
Rhode Island and Germany. This cache was put together by
* The Gerbils * from Hiddenhausen, Germany, and swapped with a
cache assembled by us, BBWolf+3Pigs. Each cache contains items that
represent the two, very distinct, locations. The listing for the
cache in Germany is
GCVH2K.
When trading, please try to include an item that truly
represents the area you are from. When the German items are close
to being depleted, the items traded in here will be swapped with
items traded into the sister cache in Germany. So let's leave some
nice stuff - we don't want to look cheap!
This walk will bring you to the Ashville Pond area in the
Rockville
Wildlife Management Area. I had intended to place it closer
to the pond, but when I got to the above coordinates, I knew
this was the place to put the cache. It is a very nice spot for
a picnic, so bring a blanket and some food, and enjoy the spot.
It is not much further to the pond, so I recommend the extra
walk.
Park at PK below, and then walk along the Yellow Blazed
Narragansett Trail. (Be sure to follow the blazes - there is what
seems to be a side trail going off the main trail at one point, but
dead ends quickly.) This will result in a hike of about 2.5 miles
round trip. I was able to walk it in under an hour, but I was
really going too quickly to enjoy the walk. For a shorter hike
(~0.6 miles round trip), you can start out on Stubtown Road (P2) to
the south of the cache. There is a trail head for the Narragansett
Trail just before the road becomes private property. The trail
shown on the topos coming in from the North does not exist!
Reveritt and I started out on what was probably the trail, but
within 50 yards it dissolved into heavy brush. Also, the trail
indicated on the topos from the specified parking area are not
correct - it is a little more curvy and a little longer.
This hike is described as part of the Long Pond - Ell Pond walk
in Ken Weber's Walks and Rambles in Rhode Island. You
can find maps at the DEM's Website.. Be sure to
let someone know where you are headed, and bring a cellphone. An
emergency card such a
this one is also a good idea.
