Geocache Description:

This cache is located just off the WB&E Old Railroad Grade Trail near Tannersville. This trail is along the eastern side of Camelback Mountain in Big Pocono State Park. This is the first in a series of seven WB&E Trail caches.

Access to the trail is on Railroad Avenue off of Rt. 715 near Tannersville.
Park at N 41° 02.167’ W 075° 20.529’. There is a small gravel parking area on the side of the road with enough room for about 5 cars. There is a sign nearby that states hikers, horses and bicycles are allowed, however, if using a bicycle, there are some areas along the trail with lots of scattered rocks and there are also a few logs/downed trees across the trail. Total hiking distance (one-way) to the cache location from the parking area is about 0.87 miles. The trail is an old railroad grade and is very level. There are a few low spots on the trail where water or ice can collect. The cache is located about 150 feet off the trail. Be careful going up here, some loose rocks and lots of leaves - this area is why the terrain is rated 3-stars. Cache container is a large ammo box. There is an envelope for both FTF and STF.

Some history about the WB&E: The WB&E (Wilkes Barre & Eastern) railroad was a shortline railroad that was in existence from 1892-1939. From what I could find out, steam trains pulled cars loaded with coal down the mountain (and returned uphill with empty coal cars). Try to imagine what it must have been like as you hike to the cache location along the old railroad grade. Enjoy the hike!

This is cache #1 in the WB&E Trail series. Cache #3 and cache #7 are also located on this part of the WB&E Trail. Cache #2 is still in progress, and caches #4,5,6 are located on the other side of the mountain in State Game Lands #38.

This geocache has been placed with DCNR permission.
