Geocache Description:

The cache is in the Sandia foothills about 0.4 mi east of the Simms Park

The waypoint for this cache is on the Pino Trail at the boundary of the Albert G. Simms Park and the national forest. The cache itself is located about 0.4 miles to the northeast beyond this point. The easiest approach is to take the Pino Trail (#140) from the eastern most parking area ($1 parking fee on weekdays and $2 on weekends) of the Elena Gallegos Picnic area.

The cache is close to a well-used but unofficial trail along a ridge. I think you’ll find that the view of the Pino arroyo, all of Albuquerque and beyond is well worth the hike. The distance from the parking lot is about 2 km and “power” hikers should reach the cache location in less than 30 min. The elevation gain is a little less than 500 ft.

From where the Pino Trail passes through forest boundary fence, the cache is at a bearing of 40 degrees (true) and a distance of 685 m. One of the easier ways to proceed is, at the boundary pass-through, take the trail to the left (north) and continue across this central branch of the pino arroyo. At the point where the trail leaves the arroyo, leave the trail and traverse to the right (east) up to the top of the ridge. You will find the “unofficial” trail at the top. I would advise following this trail somewhat to the east of the cache location before turning back to find it.

The cache is a Kirkland (Costco) cashew nut jar. The initial contents include a first-finder’s prize (taken from the Durid Castle Cache), “The Vet” TB, a golf ball, a matchbox auto, a key fob, a short Ethernet cross-over cable, and more. Sorry, no cashew nuts!
