Lembro que a eventual reactivação desta cache passará pelo mesmo processo de análise como se fosse uma nova cache, com todas as implicações que as guidelines actuais indicam.

Geocache Description:

From Vila Nova da Barquinha to Barreiro, the Tagus river follows a N30ºE orientation. It is the most visible hint to the Lower Tagus Valley Fault system.

First of all, an important notice: the cache is not on the above coordinates. Read the text through to find out how you may hunt it.

Major earthquakes that were felt in the Great Lisbon area over the past centuries indicate the existence of a relevant fault system in the Lower Tagus Valley. The 1344, 1531 and 1909 earthquakes were major ones, with an estimated 6 to 7 degrees of magnitude in the Richter scale. Though the 1344 event is poorly documented (maybe the fact that it was 750 years ago is related to that), the 1531's damage reports (Mercalli scale VIII level) indicate a multiple fracture rupture in active faults along the Tagus and a perpendicular fault. The 1909 earthquake was felt as a IX to X Mercalli level on the Benavente, Samora Correia and Santo Estevão area. Its epicentre was calculated on a 4kms depth and was probably generated on a transverse fault (orientation: Castanheira do Ribatejo - Samora Correia - Santo Estevão) to the main one. The main problem on characterising this fault system concerns (ironically) the river itself. Though the Tagus really gives a hint on the major fault direction and importance, the alluvium deposits it has generated (at least 60mts deep) difficult the fault system direct observation.

Still, besides the historically documented seismology, there are some indirect characteristics that point out to the faut system:
- the Almeirim Low Mountain range (170 mts high) corresponds to a SE balanced semi-horst;
- Santarém is located in a elevation that is structurally a horst limited by non-defined faults;
- Satellite images show linear tracks (from Tomar to Adiça-Setúba region), that possibly correspond to the superficial expression of a deeper fault;
- Exploratory perforations (mainly for water purposes) reveal sharp vertical in-depth evolutions (in horizontal short distances);
- Rock differences between opposite sides of the river;
- Gravimetry evidences (and if you excuse me, I was not able to fully understand this part of the study this page is based on)

The cache:

The cache is not hidden in the above coordinates. These coordinates indicate a location in Santarém where you may find a great scenic view over the Tagus River and its hidden fracture. If you want to hunt this cache, first of all, you have to discover IMC No3 P-PT - 23rd April 1909 cache. Then, you will have to swap hints with geocachers who have already discovered other IMC No 3 P caches. In each of these countries, a primary cache (like IMC No3 P-PT - 23rd April 1909) is hidden somewhere. When a geocacher finds it, he / she will also find a hint sheet, with hints to all the 6 secondary caches around the world. These secondary caches (like the one you are reading about now) can only be found with the hints that are scattered all around the globe. That means that if you want to find the secondary cache in your country (this one), you have to trade the hints you discovered in the primary cache, with the hints other geocachers found on their countries primary cache.

This IMC set (the 3rd one) is dedicated to the Earth element. But I hope you don't have your experience enhanced by feeling a shake while hunting for this one.
