New Angling Regulations for the Sackville and Little Sackville Rivers, Nova Scotia Tuesday, April 01, 2003.

Not that long ago, the Sackville River was one of the premiere Salmon Rivers in Nova Scotia. The river even supported a hatchery that was used for seeding other NS Rivers with both Speckled Trout and Atlantic Salmon. Unfortunately, due to rapid development and urbanization, with their attendant impacts, in the early 1960's and Acid Rain even today, the Atlantic Salmon runs were almost wiped out.

When the Sackville Rivers Association was founded in 1988, only six salmon that were counted in the river that year. Through stocking and ongoing habitat restoration, with the support of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and other partners, the Sackville River has shown increasing salmon returns. In 1996, a DFO mark/recapture indicated over 750 Atlantic Salmon had returned to the river.

The SRA, along with DFO, operates an Atlantic Salmon counter on the river and last year over 150 Atlantic Salmon were counted on their return to the Sackville River. After years of lobbying to have the river scheduled "fly fishing only" the SRA's efforts were rewarded this spring with the implementation of the 2003 N.S. Angling Regulations. These new regulations (fly fishing only) apply only to specific sections of the river from June 1st until October 31st, and are designed to protect Atlantic Salmon stocks while encouraging other angling experiences.

For complete details consult the Nova Scotia Angler's handbook and 2003 Summary of Regulations.

The Sackville River will be the first Nova Scotia river to be scheduled since 1993 and becomes the 23rd Scheduled River or portion of river to be scheduled in Nova Scotia. This scheduling will help in restoration efforts of Atlantic Salmon in the Sackville River and should increase tourism to the river.

Our thanks to the staff of Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Inland Fisheries Division) for implementing these regulations. This was achieved through the consolation process involving the ZMAC 21 Advisory Committee Meetings, the Recreational Fisheries Advisory Council Meetings (RFAC) and involved user groups. The Sackville Rivers Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of the Sackville River Watershed's natural habitat for the enhancement of adjacent communities and properties and to increase awareness and concern for the cleanliness of our urban and rural areas.
