Geocache Description:

Dur Ghella Island, Dahlak Archipelago, Eritrea. First geocache in Eritrea!! You'll need a boat to get to this cache, thus the difficulty rating.

The geocache is a plastic box covered by a pile of stones beneath one of two trees that are closer to one another than most of the island's sparse trees. The island is small enough that you can reasonably get to the geocache from any convenient landing point, but the northeast side is probably most convenient.

Cache contents:
Ceasar's Palace pen
Logbook
1 Egyptian Pound
20 Thai Baht
1 Ethiopian Birr
Pendant featuring a famous Thai Buddhist monk
American/Eritrean flags pin
2 Eritrean hair pins
1 sapphire ring (I think it's fake, but pretty)

Info about the area: The Dahlak Archipelago is one of the untouched jewels of the Red Sea. With practically no tourist development and indeed very little habitation or even fishing traffic, the islands in this sprawling cluster of lonely sand bars and uplifted coral beds are the archetypal desert islands. The snorkeling is fantastic, with reefs untrodden by the tourist hordes that have trampled other tropical reefs to little more than gravel. Some of the islands offer great diving along deep walls as well. During Eritrea's long history of conflict, the islands have been used as bases by several powers and signs of past conflict can be seen on Dur Ghella as exploded shell casings. The Eritrean military stills uses some of the islands as bases, others as prisons, which limits the islands travelers can get permission to visit. A current rumor has it that the US military maintains an anti-terrorism base here, though with frosty relations between the Eritreans and the US, this seems unlikely.
