....at least, it could have been, depending on your
altitude, and had this structure not been built quite up to
specifications.
Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House
Built in 1871 by Sandford Hooper. It was bought in 1886 by
Samuel Bowler, who added rooms and a two-story
outhouse to accommodate his large family. The Alfred
Hillstrom family moved into the house in 1901. They lived there
until 1975 when it was purchased by the Belle Plaine Historical
Society.
The outhouse is no joke, it has three toilets on
each floor, and is connected to the main building with a screened
walkway. The toilets upstairs sit a bit farther back so that the
um....well, you get the picture. The outhouse is no longer in use
because of safety concerns.
The house has been restored and furnished in three periods:
1980's, Late Victorian, and early 1900's to depict what a home in
Belle Plaine may have looked like in those times, and is open for
visitors and tours 1:00-4:00 p.m. every Sunday from Memorial Day to
Labor Day, and other times by appointment.
