Geocache Description:

THE ABOVE COORDINATES ARE BOGUS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIND THE CACHE THERE *THIS IS A NIGHTTIME ONLY CACHE*

There are few people alive today that remember the horror that occurred in these hills. And those that do remember, refuse to speak about it. It was a terror that gripped the people of what is now Reliance, Tn for over 5 years. In October of 1898 seven year old Mary Toutson was playing near the river bank with her nine year old brother Joshua. Joshua was about 50 yards away from his sister when he heard the scream. He saw what he described as a large man with long stringy hair that hung about his face and dressed in torn and tattered clothing, grab Mary and run off into the woods. A massive man hunt followed, but no trace of Mary was ever found. Mary Toutson was not to be the last victim. Although he preyed primarily on young girls, it appeared that no one was safe from this monster. By late 1899 over seven people had vanished within this small community. The people of Reliance had become fearful and justifiably suspicious of all strangers. A self imposed dusk to dawn curfew and been implemented. The men took turns and kept watch during the night hours. No one walked around by themselves. The people would lay in their beds at night wide awake fearing that every twig that they heard snap would be the long haired man coming for them. The people of Reliance continued their precautions for many years and saw a decrease in disappearances. Despite this, the attacks continued, and only rarely was it witnessed. And of the few attacks that were witnessed, all descriptions were identical, a very unkempt tall muscular man with long matted hair that covered his face. No one was able to track him or find any of the victims. Only one man was known to have faced down the long haired man. William McCaleb was a man of large stature and strong back, who worked as a stone mason. He and his son Aaron were loading stone from the river banks when the long haired man made a grab for Aaron. William charged at the man as he tossed Aaron aside to focus on him. Aaron ran across the fields to get help. The towns men and women soon returned armed with rifle, axe and cleaver. William McCaleb’s decapitated body was found floating at the river’s edge. Many families fled the area, abandoning their homes and farms for fear that their sons or daughters would be next. By 1901 over 17 people had vanished without a trace, and up to that point, no one had ever been found. On a cold February day, Jefferson Wallace was out feeding his live stock when he saw something hanging from a large tree across the field. He picked up his rifle and cautiously made his way across the field to the tree. Jefferson grew pale as he grew close to the tree and was able to make out the object hanging there. It was Melissa Clevenger who had vanished the prior day. She was hanging by a rope bound to her hands, her clothes were ripped and ragged. He saw several wounds to her legs arms chest and face. Most of them appeared to be bite wounds at first glance. He took out his knife and cut her down. As she hit the ground she let out a gasp. She was alive. Melissa awoke a few hours later, feverous and near delirious. She was able to recall that she had been taken to the Dark Place and that he had done horrible things. She also stated that she was not alone in the Dark Place… The others were there too. The children. She then drifted off to sleep. Melissa died a few hours later. It is not known why Melissa was left alive and released. The disappearances stopped after that. The people of Reliance for many years to follow never let their children play alone or go out after dark. Many speculated as to why the attacks stopped and to why they were attacked in the first place. But to this day it remains a mystery. As does the location of The Dark Place and where the others are located. This is a night time only cache!!!!! You will need a flash light or better yet a lantern(for better effect) Please be careful and watch for snakes and bears and the long haired man. Cacher assumes all risks by attempting this cache.
