Shalmaneser’s Walk in the Park


During his reign as king of Assyria, Shalmaneser III (858-824 B.C.) significantly expanded effective Assyrian power to the W and SW, beginning with the Battle of Qarqar in 853 B.C.


Kurkh Stele


The text of the Kurkh Stele recounts how Shalmaneser’s army faced off against coalition forces now at Qarqar. The text reports that the coalition included Israel under king Ahab. (Kurkh stele, transl in Pritchard, Ancient Near Eastern Texts, 277-8.
