The Great Train Robbery

On the morning of march 17:th 1907 Axel Wilhelm Fors had overslept. That’s why he never went to work that day. Instead a friend of his, called Friberg, came over at noon.
- I need some money fast. Do you have any idea how we can get our hands on some? Asked Friberg. Then he suggested that they should rob a bank or something like that.
- -I don’t want anybody to see me out on the town since I stayed home from work.
- Maybe we can rob the Simrishamn – Malmö train. It’s got a post-carriage and there is money, answered Fors. In the evening they went to buy tickets.
They bought one from Staffanstorp and one from Kyrkheddinge so none should know that they were travelling together. When the train arrived in Staffanstorp the next day it had to wait a short while before coming into the station. Friberg and Fors jumped of the train and walked to the station. Then they went to a café and had some coffee. At the café they spoke Danish to fool the other guests. When the train from Simrishamn came in they climbed aboard. Fors put a mask over his head but Friberg had forgotten his. Now they only had five minutes to do the robbery before the train arrived in Djurslöv.
- Hands up, yelled Fors and pointed his gun at mailman Almén who was in the post-carriage. Almén started to wrestle with Friberg while Fors grabbed the money.
Suddenly somebody knocked on the door, asking what happened in there. Fors lost his cool and shot Almén. He was hit between the eyes. Almén didn´t die but the bullet gave him trouble for the rest of his life. The doctors were afraid to remove it in case that would damage his eye-sight.
Fors and Friberg jumped of the train. They walked through puddles of water and ditches to ensure that dogs wouldn’t be able to pick up their scent. They spent the night in a barn in Bulltofta. They split the money – nearly 6000 kronor. When the police later caught Fors and Friberg they had only 1000 kronor left. Fors had among other things bought two suites and a bicycle . When he came to work he also had abrasions on his face and that’s what made the police suspicious.
Fors and Friberg were sentenced to penal servitude for life for what still is the only train robbery ever in Sweden.
They stayed in prison for 18 years. In 1925 they granted amnesty.
In 1910 Fors had written Almén a letter apologizing for the trouble the bullet had caused him
