Geocache Description:

Waterproof match holder.

In 1926, the Palacios Campground Association donated the land at this site to the state to use as a military training base with the idea that a base would help boost the local economy. The State named the facility Camp Palacios and in the summer of 1926, 6,500 recruits were brought here for training. This became the home of the Thirty sixth division, made up of soldiers from Texas and Oklahoma. In 1930 the installation was renamed Camp Hulen, in honor of Brigadier General John Augustus Hulen. The Thirty Sixth maintained Camp Hulen until 1940 when they were relocated and the base was used as an antiaircraft training base due to its close proximity to the bay. At its peak, the 1,460 acres was home to 14,560 troops. In 1944, the base was converted into a German Prisoner of War camp and on May 31, 1946 was turned over to the Texas National Guard. Rather then using the camp, the national guard dismantled and sold the structures and finally the land. One structure which survived is the camp chapel which can be seen in Danevang. This Church was purchased and moved to Danevang after a hurricane destroyed their previous church.
Like many retired military bases in Texas, this one only lasted slightly past World War II, but served its state and country in many capacities.
