The “Tamarack House” commemorative plaque.
In 1837, the United States government negotiated treaties with the Ojibway and Dakota tribes and opened the St. Croix Valley for settlement. In 1839, in Crawford County, Wisconsin "Territory", Joseph Renshaw Brown (First Settler of this valley) laid out the town of Dahcotah. A creek North of town is named after him- “Browns Creek” and was the site of the one of the first saw mills.
The following year, Brown built Tamarack House to serve as a courthouse.. the 1st capitol building in Minnesota in an area presently called “Dutch Town”. Brown also is credited with suggesting the Name “Minnesota” when delegates were meeting to set up the new territory.
