Geocache Description:

The trailhead starts just behind the apple orchard. The Related web Link above takes you to the Long Hill Trustees of Reservations web site (this is their HQ), and you link to the Long Hill Woodlands trail map here: http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/map-library/ .

From 1916-1979 Long Hill was the country estate of the Sedgwick family. It was first purchased by noted author of Atlantic Monthly magazine, Ellery Sedgwick, and his first wife Mabel Cabot Sedgwick, an accomplished horticulturist and author of the The Garden Month by Month.

The Antebellum-style house was built in 1921 and contains original woodwork from the 1802 Issac Ball House in Charleston, South Carolina. The gardens were first designed and planted by Mrs. Sedgwick. Mr. Sedgwick's second wife, the former Marjorie Russell of England, enhanced the gardens with unusual species, many introduced by the Arnold Arboretum.

Five acres of cultivated grounds are laid out in a series of distinct garden areas surrounding the house, each accented by a diversity of garden structures. The grounds are surrounded by over 100 acres of woodland (containing two miles of trails) as well as an apple orchard and meadow. More than 400 species of plants are grown, many very unusual.

Per Danvers Duo: "This is a easy family type of cache. We opted to make this a book cache because this type of cache has become one of our favorites. We put a FTF travel bug dog tag in the cache as well as Johnny Damon's book. You can start your own TB. We have also included a variety of children's books as well as some Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries. We used two GPSrs to get the coordinates so please let us know if you get a different reading. Happy Caching!!"

The cache is an ammo box.
