Park on County Rd. 28 at the entrance to the rail trail (N 44° 24.697' W 79° 48.840'). The first 985 m is flat rail trail and perfect for biking. The final 140 m is overgrown with golden rod, etc. (May have to jump a water-filled ditch in the wet season.)
Terrain difficulty is for the last 140 m only.
To find this cache, you will have to venture into the heart of downtown Josephine. You will find the entrance to Josephine well marked on a rail trail. STAY ON THE RAIL TRAIL until you come to the sign. Coordinates are included.
In 1879 Joseph Budd erected a sawmill and small "village" to house his workers on this site. This small village was known as "Josephine", named after Budd's daughter. For years, it was a "flag stop" on the North Simcoe Railway, for passengers travelling to and from Allandale. (Allandale was a city on the south shore of Kempenfelt Bay, long ago absorbed into Barrie.)
Joseph Budd was the last of three lumbermen who cut the great primeval white pine forests. At the site, you will see some remains of the worker's housing, Joseph's house, and some other ruins, including a unique stucco outhouse.
Please do NOT climb on the ruins. You can retrieve and replace the cache without physically disturbing any part of the ruins.
