Grab the hiking boots, LOTS of water, your camera and head
for the hills. To find the trail head take Highway 1 East pass
Chilliwack and take Exit 123. Turn south onto Prest Road. After 4km
turn left onto Baily Road and then take the right fork onto Elk
View Road. Stay on the main road as it travels through Ryder Lake
Community. Once past the Ryder Lake Fire Hall you leave the
blacktop and enter onto the Chipmunk Creek Forest Service road. The
first parking area you see is your trail head. The coordinates for
the trail head are:
N49.06.294
W121.49.248
The hike itself averages a 20% grade and is well defined by
trail markers. The trail is wide and you are in the woods most of
the way up. The cache is hidden at 1407 metres. Don't worry about
GPS reception, turn it on once you are near the top. The cache is
located in a very open area at the summit.
Once near the summit, you will be treated to wild flowers
and wild strawberries that fill the air with their sweet scents,
and of course, the views!
After you find this cache, keep going to DocMagoo's cache:
Elk-Thurston Trek (GCPXNQ) which is on the summit of Mount
Thurston. Return trip for the summit of Elk Mountain is 8km, but
walk the ridge line over to Mount Thurston for even better views.
The return trip for both summits is about 11 km. The trail over to
Mount Thurston is not as steep as the Elk
summit.
Once you find the cache, please leave a written piece of
philosophy or your favourite quote in the logbook. These types of
places seem to bring this out in me. I like to reflect on top of a
mountain. Give it a try.

Please ensure the cache is relocated and secure before
leaving.
Because of the area, please be prepared before heading out
on this hike. Take plenty of water, wear proper footwear and let
somebody know where you are going. This cache will only be
accessable during the summer months as it will be covered with snow
in the winter.
Thanks to DocMagoo and GeoJakers for the great day hike.
Great friends made this hike even better!
Hope you enjoy the cache.
