Geocache Description:

Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada, at NASA research camp near 20km Haughton impact crater, cache located 200m ENE from main base in rock butte 60m SE from main airport strip. Altitude 252m ASL.

Stainless steel 1 liter thermos, slightly dented, external taped label, contents include paper and pencil, NASA decal, fabric base patch, 2007 Phoenix Mars lander pin, small AA-size flashlight (useless in summer, but 24-hour darkness in winter).

Cache located near a impact crater site that, given its permafrost and landforms, has been used by NASA and CSA since 1997 as a Mars-analog and lunar-analog site in research studies and in testing prototype spacesuits, drills, rovers, and instruments. Only inhabited in summer season, typically late June to mid-August. Summer visit requests can be coordinated through the Kenn Borek Air or Polar Shelf offices in Resolute -- in off-season, just persuade your charter or helicopter pilot to stop over briefly, cache is near the runway. Polar bears are rare at this inland site, but do wander by occasionally.

Be advised that there are seven rock cairns set up within a 10-km radius, as traditional Inuit inukshuks (human-like rock figures) honoring the Columbia crew members lost in February 2004. One is located at the top of the rock butte overlooking the cache, but it is *not* a geocache (base capsules contain family items and mission mementoes, not to be disturbed or swapped).

Devon Island is currently the world's largest year-round uninhabited landform. In US terms, it is about the size of the state of West Virginia.
