Geocache Description:

THERE APPEARS TO BE LOGGING / CONSTRUCTION HAPPENING NEAR THE CACHE AREA. THE CACHE SHOULD BE AVOIDED UNTIL THE WORK IS COMPLETE. SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This cache is roughly a 6km hike or bike up old (rough in spots) logging roads from the bridge over the Cowichan River at the foot of Mayo Road by Skutz Falls. This is a beautiful area and makes for a nice afternoon trip. I hiked up today and placed the cache with 7 year old Ninja Turtle Amy. She had no problems with either the hike up or the climb down into the Troll's Lair. She has the confidence and ability to do this sort of thing, but a note to others thinking about coming up here with little ninja turtles, the area directly around the Troll's Lair is potentially very dangerous. There is the potential of very serious falls if you are not paying attention.

The cache itself is not inside the Troll's Lair. So if trolls aren't your thing you can still enjoy the cache and a very nice afternoon walk or ride. If you plan to go into the Troll's Lair bring along a good flashlight or better yet a good headlamp. I also strongly recommend you carry a backup light, especially if you make this a solo adventure. If your only light source fails when you are deep inside the lair you will be in big trouble and the troll will chew on your dead bones. A helmet is also a very good idea. There is always the possibility of falling rock and (trust me on this) it really, really, REALLY hurts when you ram your unprotected head into the jagged rock inside the lair. It is an incredible place though and I was very happy to get to show it to Ninja Turtle Amy today. She was up here once before, but then she was only 6 months old, and didn't get to do much exploring of the Troll's Lair.

The Troll's Lair is up a short trail which is currently marked at the side of the old road with flagging tape and a good sized rock cairn. There is also at the moment an arrow marked on the ground, but it is pointing up the road and not toward the Troll's Lair. I really don't know why it is there and didn't have time to explore further today.

There are also two nice viewpoints along the way up that are worth a look. The first is at N48 45.881 W123 56.635 and is a very short walk down a little, bushy spur road. The second at N48 45.321 W123 57.354 involves a short bushwhack off the side of the old logging road.

Enjoy the area, but pay attention in the immediate vicinity of the cache and please use good judgment if you plan to hunt for the troll.
