This is the fourth cache in a letterbox series inspired by the Geological Wall at St Andrews.
The Geological Wall contains 22 rocks collected from all over Fife. A leaflet created by the St Andrews Geological Heritage Project gives details of each rock, along with Ordnance Survey grid references of their source localities. Hopefully this series will end up taking cachers to each of these localities. It is my intention to hide the caches as close as possible to the grid references given in the leaflet - this may mean that the caches are not necessarily going to be hidden in scenic, historical or interesting places! The information about the rock given below has been adapted from the Geological Wall leaflet.
As its name suggests, this type of limestone contains fossilised colonies of coral. As most corals grow in warm seas, it seems highly likely that this rock was formed when Fife lay close to the equator. In the 19th century, these rocks, along with other local limestones, were burnt in nearby kilns to produce lime for building and agriculture.
Park at N56 04.211 W003 10.349 - this is Kinghorn Beach car park. You will need to make your way onto the Fife Coastal Path so turn right out of the car park entrance, walk under the railway bridge and the coastal path can be picked up on the right - through the childrens playground.
On your way to the cache, have a look at the artwork on the rocks at N56 04.398 W003 09.994, and use your imagination to decide what some of the weirder rock formations could be - we saw a submarine and a sleeping dinosaur!
Cache contains log book, wooden stamp and ink pad only (and something to write with of course!)
The cache is at the bottom of a scree-like slope of small rocks, and as such is probably not suitable for younger children to access. Also watch out for jaggies at the cache site - there is a hawthorn bush and a large bramble immediately to the left, and a briar of bramble lies at the entrance to the hiding place!
