WP1 is the last resting place of Mads Lange, a Dane who established a trading post in Kuta in 1839. The Dutch did not occupy south Bali until the early 1900’s, so he was the only European presence here until his death. Before the arrival of mass tourism in the mid 1970’s Kuta was a small fishing village and the local people grew up on tales of Mads Lange’s lavish funeral procession and he was an important historical figure, one of his children married the Sultan of Johore, and the current Sultan of Johore is a direct descendant of Mads Lange. Most of the people in Kuta today, being outsiders, wouldn’t know about him as Kuta has grown from a small impoverished fishing village to become the bustling place it is today and the richest village in Indonesia. So all you geocaching travellers can now visit an important historical site in Kuta that you would never otherwise hear about. If you need directions, ask “dimana kuburan Tuan Langa?” (where is Mr Lange’s grave) Enjoy the search and think back 150 years. The cache is in the care of the cemetery caretaker who has a small kiosk (warung) next to the cemetery, just ask for the "kotak (box) tuan Lange", she also holds a book for non geocache visitors to the grave to sign, so make sure you ask for the kotak. If the kiosk is closed just take a photo of you at the memorial and include it when you log the find. You can find more information about Mads Lange on Wikipedia.
