This cache has been placed to introduce you to Pennsylvania’s newest State Park.
This park is currently mostly undeveloped and is being supervised by Presque Isle State Park personnel. This cache will take you to the Bluffs so you can see how the park got its name. Permission to place this cache has been given by Presque Isle State Park and the Girard Township supervisors.
There are two parking spots available. The nearest to the cache is the paved lot at the Elk Creek access area. This area is currently managed by Girard Township but plans are to include this area in the park. The trailhead is at N42°01.250’ W080°22.501’. The trail starts at the west side of the parking lot. Soon after entering the woods you will come to a fork; stay to the left. This trail gains 100 feet of altitude in .14 miles of horizontal distance (30m in .23km).
An easier, but longer, flat walk can be had by parking in the Lake Erie Bluffs parking lot at N42°00.908, W080°22.589’, which is just north of State Route 5 at the west end of the Elk Creek hill. This easy walk is about .51 miles (.82km) each way and follows the farming road here to a trailhead near the bluffs. Cars are currently not allowed beyond the parking lot without permission.
Trails to the east of the cache will take you to the beach, where you can find fossilized plants in the shale. Don’t attempt to reach the beach directly from the cache site, though.
