Geocache Description:

Enjoy the view from atop the Free States most famous landmark.

This is a walk of approximately 1 hour round trip to the top of one of the Free State's best known landmarks, The Brandwag (Sentinel). You can start the climb from either end, either opposite the Protea Hotel, or the Glen Reenen Rest camp. If you start from the Glen Reenen Rest camp side, you will need to negotiate a short chain ladder near the top. I recommend starting at the Glen Reenen side, and after grabbing the cache and enjoying the view, heading down the other side by following a portion of the Ribbok trail down to the Protea Hotel. You can admire the full stature of the Brandwag on your way down and return to Glen Reenen via the tar road which snuggles just below the sandstone massif.

Regardless of the route you take, if you are a day visitor report to the office at either of the camps and obtain a permit to go walking. The office will also advise you of any dangers, VERY NB!!

This is snake country, especially for the lazy puffadder. I suggest you walk with a stick, and make sure the cache isn't being kept warm by any unfriendly creatures. Make sure you replace the cache carefully and cover firmly with rocks. Don't place any foodstuffs or any items that have a scent. I've seen very young children climb to the top of the Brandwag, and did so myself when I was 6 years old. However take care with children, the top of the Brandwag is surrounded by cliff edges and there is no warning that you are approaching the edge.

DO NOT wander around in misty conditions!!

The cache is in a 1.6l waterproof container, and is protected with a green water resistant bag. Review and print these instructions to make sure you close the bag correctly so that it remains reasonably watertight.

Make sure to carry your binoculars and camera. Great views, and if you are lucky you may even spot the extremely rare bearded vulture. Don't forget to carry water!!

Sit back, have a drink, and enjoy the view.
