Geocache Description:

Located near the village of Catsash this cache is for cats and cat lovers. It is a lovely woodland walk with spectacular views.

There are several geocaches dedicated to dogs and we know that a lot of dogs enjoy geocaching BUT we feel that cats are missing out on the experience. We're sure they'd love the exploration through bushes, under logs and up trees.... if only they could be bothered to stir themselves out of those comfy armchairs. This is a cache to re-dress the balance - a cache for cats, cat lovers and those who are just cat tolerant.
The items we've placed in the cache have a feline feel and it would be good if cachers could try to keep up this theme whenever possible. Just to be really 'cat friendly' we've added a twist to the usual Log Book: We've made it a CataLog. As well as the usual details we ask you to log the name of your cat (or a cat you know or had as a child perhaps or that irritating neighbours cat that sneaks into your house....) and give a few details to honour that particular feline.
FOR EVERY LOG THAT MENTIONS A CAT BY NAME WE WILL DONATE £1 TO THE LOCAL CAT RESCUE GROUP. That's £1 per log, not per cat mentioned by the way! Naturally we'd also love to have your cat pictures added to the gallery - we've started if off with a picture of our own cat 'Gipsy'.

The cache is located on the north west side of a ridge of land overlooking the Usk river valley. The Usk Valley walk goes up this ridge and continues north to Usk. There are spectacular views of the river valley and Newport on one side and the Severn estuary on the other it is an easy walk through lovely woodland. We saw fox and the tracks of deer and badger. The walk goes up from the village of Catsash.
There is quite heavy tree cover so getting a clear signal may be a problem but there are clearings occasionally. The cache itself is a plastic box in a camouflaged bag hidden about 10 to 15 feet off the path.

Car parking at 51º 36.868N 2º 54.281W in a lay-by with space for about 3 cars. The Usk Valley walked is signposted through a private gateway and drive (it is the right of way) and after a few yards continues through a 'kissing gate' into the wood. Please don't take the obvious lane on the left (marked as 'Not a Right of Way'). The path is typical woodland, sometimes muddy and not really suitable for buggies.

The cache is about 3/4 mile from the car park and once found you can continue on the walk for another 1/4 mile to a bridle path that crosses the walk. Taking this to the left you can return to the car park across the fields. Taking it to the right is a very steep climb up the side of the ridge to Kemeys Folly. This is quite a strenuous climb to the road on the crest of the ridge but worth the effort for the views are very impressive of the Severn river and the two bridges. On a clear day you can see down to Flatholme and Steepholme islands. The road goes back down to the lay-by. The round trip is about 2.5 miles. The Roman road from Caerwent to Caerleon passes through Catsash and on the road down from Kemeys Folly there are the outlines in a field supposed to be an early Roman Fort and iron age earthworks.

This cache has been placed with kind permission from the Forestry Commission's local manager.
