This is the twenty-ninth of a series, the "Caerphilly Collection", that will explore the whole Borough Council area. There are 23 images in and around the centre of Caerphilly and all within 350 metres of the reference location. At the location of each image, the answer to a clue can be found. The answers are all numbers which will be combined arithmetically to provide the cache coordinates. The cache, a medium size plastic lunch box, is hidden within 2 km of the reference location.
The Caerphilly Collection of 50 caches is distinguished with unique CC numbers The caches vary in difficulty and type and usually have other "C" word connections - castle, cheese, coal, canal, etc. There may even be Cryptic Clues for Clever Clogs! The current Caerphilly unitary authority grew out of the former Rhymney Valley and Islwyn Councils and stretches from the outskirts of Cardiff and Newport in the south to the Brecon Beacons, north of Rhymney. Despite a past dominated by coal and heavy industry, it has a diverse history and varied and dramatic scenery. We hope you will enjoy exploring it with us.
Towards the end of the Collection,there is an "Accumulator" cache. The location of this cache is given in coded form. The translation details of the code are distributed around the whole Collection, but only about a quarter of the caches contain a piece of the code, which will be on the back of the Log Book. To do the Accumulator, you will need to keep a note of each piece of code that you find. Unless you are very lucky, you will need to find the majority of the Collection in order to do the Accumulator. The Accumulator cache is hidden in an area of difficult terrain and demanding navigation.
The images are all of features of significant size so, as the saying goes, cannot be missed - provided, of course, that you are in the right place. Those who know Caerphilly will recognise many images immediately, but may still be surprised by a few. Strangers to the town should not be deterred. A well-planned, observant hour or so stroll should find most features easily and the friendly local inhabitants will surely help you with the rest. It would be interesting to know how the staff in the Visitor Centre fare, if anyone utilises this resource! Tackling this pictorial puzzle will provide an introduction to some of the delights of Caerphilly ... and provide plenty of alternative meanings for the CC abbreviation!
All image locations are wheelchair accessible,although one may be a bit tricky ... and Caerphilly is hilly!
As it will not be possible for all with restricted mobility to retrieve the cache container, an email giving its correct co-ordinates will be accepted as a find. While the energetic may be happy to walk to the cache, most will prefer to use a car to get to the popular car park which is about 100 metres away from it.
The final approach to the cache is on paved surfaces but by busy roads, so please keep a close eye on any children. As the cache is close to a busy road, please take care not to disclose its position.
