Hedalen stavechurch is one of the app. 30 stave-churces left in Norway - and among the most beautiful? The church was build around 1160 and has an interersting history. Many of the items from catholic time,before "the black death" in Norway in 1349, is left in this church.The danich authorites never reached it after the reformation. It is believed the the valley was left (all inhabitants dead) and forgotten for 150 years after the black death. Around year 1500, a hunter missed as he aimed at a bird in the forrest, and his arrow hit the church-bell. As they entered the church, they met a bear sleeping under the altar. They shot the bear, and the fur is still to be seen in the church.
Hedalen stavkirke fra rundt 1160 er blant de flotteste i Norge. Kirken har enda mange gjenstander fra katolsk tid, da embedsmannen fra Danmark som skulle nedtegne dem aldri nådde fram hit. Dalen ble lagt øde etter Svartedauen i 1349, og sagnet forteller at kirken ble funnet igjen 150 år senere av noen jegere. De siktet på en fugl, men bommet og pilen traff isteden kirkeklokken. Da de kom inn i kirken, ble de overrasket av en bjørn som hadde søkt tilflukt under alteret. Bjørnen ble skutt, og skinnet henger fortsatt i sakristiet.
Det er jevnlig gudstjenester i kirken og i sommerhalvåret er det omvisning med guide.
There are regular services in the church (app. every third sunday), during summer time the church is open to visitors.
