This is a small cache with log book pencil and small swaps. There is a short walk along the roadside to get to the access land.
This seat is known as “The Judges Chair” and local tale has it that Judge Jeffries used to sit on it to pass judgement at the tinners court on nearby Crockern Tor. It is more than probable that it is the remains of a sepulchral monument as these are to be found on or close to ancient walls on Dartmoor and this pound is known to have built on top of older walls.
The wall in which the chair is to be found surrounds Dunnabridge Pound and this was mentioned in records in 1342 when the great sum of 3d was spent on a lock for the gate. The chair was used as stocks at one time as it was mentioned again in records of 1620 when more money was spent on repair of the stone walls, gate and “stocks” at Dunnabridge Pound.
Today, it is a perfect setting for a photograph and I have seen a coach load of visitors to the moor queuing up to have their “turn” on the seat.
The cache cordinates are for the cache but the Chair and parking are at N 50° 33.313 W 03° 54.765
The cache itself is not located in the pound or seat to comply with National Park Guidelines regarding antiquities. It is on access land across the main road towards Dartmeet.
