A Cozy Little Nook Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

chaosmanor: This has definitely gone missing again. The spot also looks to have been worked over by trail crews, or else by whoever took the cache. It is definitely no longer a good spot for a cache, so it is time to shut this down. Two new caches have been hidden in its place [:)] Many thanks to all who came out for this. Sad to see a cache this old go bye-bye, but nothing lasts forever.

Geocache Description:

A quarter-mile hike up an interesting trail in the Santa Ynez Mountains.

The trailhead is obvious, right along SR 33 not quite two miles north of the stop sign at El Roblar/Cuyama at the north end of Ojai. A standard, brown NFS sign for the trail is on the west side of the road, at the Sheldon Canyon Bridge (#52-42) over the highway. There is lots of parking south of the sign on that side of the road: mile marker 14.58 is just south of this parking area. Apparently, you no longer need an Adventure Pass to park here. Cross the highway carefully, and take the trail up Sheldon Canyon. The rains of Winter 2004-05 really washed out a lot of the lower canyon, but the thing is dry, now, so scrambling over the rocks for about 200 feet isn't hard, and a trail crew did some work on it, so it's in fair shape. After that, the trail climbs easily up some switchbacks, with a nice view of the area, including a large citrus orchard. The sound of a large number of bees working the honeysuckle farther up the canyon walls filled the air

Dogs and horses are allowed, but not recommended until they are able to repair the trail more. There is a lot of poison oak in spots, but it is easily avoidable. Young children will need to be carefully supervised, but anyone who knows what PO looks like will do just fine. But dogs are likely to get into the stuff, even on a leash. THERE IS NO P.O. ANYWHERE NEAR THE HIDING SPOT!

About 150-200 feet up the trail from the cache is a very large boulder that appears to have fallen from the cliff above. The trail is still solid past that, but this area shows how much damage those rains caused. With so many trails to be worked on, it'll be years before every trail is fixed.
