This should be a fun one. It’s an easy 2 step multi within a few hundred feet
of the final. Ah, but the catch…to claim the cache you’ll need some special
equipment to sign your Geocaching ID like a can of spray paint, chalk, crayon,
finger paints or whatever you have with you, graffiti is the name of the game.
It’s okay to overwrite other “entries”. Then take a picture of your name and
post it with your log.
In Oberlin, a little history is in order for
everything, including the rock. This 7 ton glacial rock was a gift to Oberlin
College from 39 students that rolled out of Plum Creek and all the way to Tappan
Square in 1898. The tradition of painting the rock began in 1962 when all the
rocks were painted as Easter Eggs with a sign that read: “Glacial Easter Eggs
Laid by the Class of 1964.” Since that time it is painted mostly as a message
board for greeting, birthdays or whatever needs to be said nearly day by day.
It’s an on going Oberlin tradition.
Just a note to the finders: We
have permission from the people at one of the oldest higher learning facilities
in the country, Oberlin College, to allow your name in the form of graffiti on
this historic rock. Thanks you to them for sharing their rock with us and
opportunity to share the beautiful Tappan Square with the Geocaching community
and to have a little fun during their visit.
