Geocache Description:

Note: This cache was originally placed by Team Wampus. Since we live so close, Wampus asked us to adopt it. This is one of our favorite places to walk and is very peaceful. Lots of great history too!

East Tennessee has been home to many Saturday Night Dirt Track racers, but Knoxville produced at least one Indy 500 driver. A. J. "Pete" Kreis had his personal best Indy 500 finish in his first attempt, placing 8th in 1925. In 1931, he drove relief for Ralph Hepburn, who was credited with a 3rd place finish. Kreis's crowning achievement in racing was a First Place victory in the 1927 Italian Grand Prix.

Kreis was a favorite to win the 1934 Indy 500, but died while practicing for that race in “the most unusual accident in the history of the speedway”. Read the full account of the accident and a short biography on Kreis at (visit link) . I don't want to say too much about the headstone because I don't want to spoil your "discovery", but the headstone reportedly shows exactly where Kreis's car left "The Brickyard" exiting Turn No. 1. Kreis was killed instantly and his ride-along mechanic died a few minutes later. As you can probably surmise from the size of the headstone, Kreis's family was in the marble business in Knoxville.

This is an OFFSET CACHE. The listed coordinates will bring you to the wall edge where the cache container is hidden.

The cache container is not at a gravesite it is in a crack in the wall.

With your back to the wall, look about 50 or so feet in front of you and to the right (about 1 o'clock). There you will clearly see a huge headstone with the name "KREIS" on it. Walk over to this headstone, look on the north side, and you will see a little race car on a race track carved into the headstone.

TO GET CREDIT FOR FINDING THIS CACHE, SIGN THE LOGSHEET IN THE CACHE CONTAINER AND EMAIL ME THE NUMBER CARVED ON PETE'S CAR.

You are welcome to post pictures of the area, but no spoilers please.
