The historcial marker placed here is dated June 6, 1937, and commemorates this pass as the one used by Father Garces in 1776 upon his return to Mojave after exploring the San Joaquin Valley. John Fremont also used the pass in his explorations in 1844-45. This was the only road through the Tehachapi Mountains until the railroad came in 1876. And now the area is used to harness the winds with the latest wind energy technology.
Isn't it interesting that this pass, the original artery into and out of the area is now considered the 'back way' by current locals? IMPORTANT!!! While there is lots of room to park and turn around off the road near the cache, there is no shoulder ON the road in either direction to allow for slowing down while watching that needle! PEOPLE SPEED ON THIS ROAD--WATCH YOUR REAR VIEW AND MAKE TURNS ACCORDINGLY!
The cache is a small plastic container with a screw on top, which needs to be fully tight when reclosing. Please carefully remove cache and replace as found.
